Chapter 23
Missing
âIâll kill him! I hope he gets away from those thieving murderers so I get the chance to do it myself!â
Callan rubbed the back of his neck, watching Davyn pace the length of the room, his forearms flexing with his clenched fists. Rhogana had returned from her negotiations with the horse seller and was currently packing gear. But Callan could tell she was watching Davyn from the corner of her eye, because when Davynâs pacing brought him closer to Perlith, her packing slowed.
âDavyn, Sabhira went on her own.â
Davyn lifted a finger at Callan and it shook with the tension in his arms, but he said nothing.
Sabhira had excused herself shortly after Kipp leftâor at least claimed to have leftâfor the flame starts. It had been obvious that she intended to keep Kipp from stealing any more coins. Davyn hadnât minded that, of course. He had even snickered when she left.
His attitude had changed when a small, scruffy street urchin had rushed into the inn in a huff. Yet once the boy arrived, heâd grown shy, apparently caught up in a grand plan and suddenly faced with his smallness. Callan knew the feeling. Once the urchin had been prodded enough, first by a smug Davyn and then by a shockingly tender Rhogana, it had come out that Kipp had given him more coins than heâd ever seen in a year. The boy insisted he was trailing Kipp to thank him; Davynâs opinion was that the boy probably only sought to empty Kippâs pockets.
That had quieted the poor kid. And cost us any time we would have had to find those two. When Callan comforted the boy back into talking, he explained how heâd heard Sabhira and Kipp mention the Wooden Pot, and then heâd seen Sabhira and Kipp get snatched into a caravan that he recognized as Zaiâdaem. Sure enough, in Callanâs room were the flame starts and the note Kipp had left on the bed, which was finally enough to erase the doubt from Davynâs mind.
Now, though, Davyn wouldnât stop fuming. Perlith was growing shorter with him, insisting they needed to leave immediately, which only made Davyn grow more anxious.
Callan wished he was as worried as Davyn. But that night, he had had the dream again of the worm-fleshed man. The soldiers in the burning forest had each worn Kippâs face clearly this time. And all the other people running in the woods seemed to him as wardfolk. Some were faces heâd seen in passing at Sun Festival, visitors from other wards. Others, though, he had recognized. Sabhiraâs had been one.
Better they are with the Zaiâdaem than with me. If it werenât for me . . . He banished the thought from his mind. It would do no good thinking about the bursting threads of light heâd seen when the krahl fell, when the rockslide struck the grimdols, when the bleakmire shifted and dulled Dara. The best thing he could do now was go with Perlith.
Perlith threw her hands up at Davyn.
